‘Alexandria is drowning’, says popular Twitter hashtag

A widely-used Twitter hashtag is mocking and decrying the extensive rainfall that has submerged many streets in Egypt’s Mediterranean province of Alexandria.

“Alexandria is drowning,” translates the hashtag that many people have used when sharing photos of submerged cars and pedestrian tunnels in numerous parts of the province.

Alexandria experienced a first round of heavy rains in late October, which killed five people and prompted the government to remove governor Hani al-Messiry from office.

“They removed the governor, yet Alexandria is still drowning, could the problem be in the president?” said marwahmohmed1.

“This is happening while we are still at the beginning of winter, what are we going to do in January and February,” @ahmedmimi20 tweeted.

“Right now, we need a plumber, not a governor,” @DodyCuta, another user, quipped.
