Al-Sabah journalists protest publication going weekly

Journalists at the privately-owned Al-Sabah daily announced a sit-in at the newspaper's headquarters in Cairo Tuesday. The protest was prompted by management’s decision to become a weekly publication due to financial constraints.

Al-Sabah’s owners sent the Supreme Press Council a letter saying work would be suspended for one month while the organization implements its restructuring program.

"The administration submitted the letter and announced the news at the newspaper's headquarters, but journalists rejected the decision because it means nearly closing the newspaper without journalists obtaining their rights," said journalist Ahmed Younes.

"We will file a complaint at the Dokki Police Station and a complaint to the Journalists Syndicate to ensure our rights because we did not have contracts," Younes said.

The sit-in will last until the administration cedes to protester demands.

Osama Ezz Eddin is the head of the newspaper’s board, while Wael al-Ebrashy is the editor-in-chief. The newspaper has been operating for six months.
