Al-Dostour’s new chairman sacks absentee reporters

Reda Edward, the new chairman of popular independent daily Al-Dostour, sacked 11 reporters this week for exceeding the number of days off allowed under the terms of Egypt's labor law.

Edward only fired upper-management reporters, however, saying that other reporters who were still absent from work were “victims of mismanagement.”

“The president of the journalists syndicate was intransigent with me,” Edward said. “He won’t tell me how to run my newspaper.’

Syndicate president Makram Mohamed Ahmed, for his part, said that Edward had failed to live up to his promises.

“We’re back to square one,” Ahmed said, noting that he planned to hold an emergency syndicate meeting to discuss the issue.
