Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyeb on Monday called on all political powers to reject the branding of any political group as traitors.
In a statement, Tayyeb condemned clashes that erupted in Abbasseya over the weekend when protesters marched to the Defense Ministry to call for swifter action on revolutionary demands.
Members from the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces accused the April 6 Youth Movement, which called for the march, of receiving foreign funds to destabilize the country. They also accused other national powers of treason.
Tayyeb expressed disappointment at those developments and condemned the use of violence. He also emphasized the right to peaceful expression, which is protected by all laws and creeds.
He further called for unity and reconstruction in order for Egypt to pass this critical stage and ensure the revolution's success.
