Al-Azhar strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted pedestrians on a street in New York, USA, killing eight people and injuring others.
A 29-year-old man identified as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov plowed into a crowd of bicyclists and pedestrians with a truck a few blocks away from the World Trade Center Tuesday afternoon, killing eight people and injuring dozens, according to CNN. Reports stated the suspect is a Uzbekistan native who came to the US in 2010.
Al-Azhar described the incident as a recent incident in a round of dark terrorist crimes that terrorize everyday people and spread hatred across the world, and went on to express condolences to the families of the victims and the US government.
The religious institutions tressed that the world is in dire need of a unified organized international effort to combat terrorism and to dry up its financial, political and intellectual sources.
Spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Ahmed Abu Zeid, said that the Egyptian Consulate General in New York reported on Tuesday evening that there had been no injuries among the Egyptian community in New York.
Abu Zeid called on Egyptians in the United States to be cautious and to avoid areas or situations that could endanger their lives.
