The Al-Azhar Supreme Council, headed by Grand Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayeb, issued a statement Tuesday confirming that classes will proceed normally at Al-Azhar University.
The statement also said exams will be held on 29 December as scheduled and under any circumstances.
Clashes between pro-Muslim Brotherhood student demonstrators and university and national security forces have been ongoing since late November. The protests began as a rebuff of "military rule," and have escalated since the death of student Abdel Ghany Mohamed Hamouda on 21 November. Students have vowed to continue protesting until the person who killed Hamouda is brought to justice.
