Al-Azhar alumni warn of ‘Iranian plot’

The Fifth International Forum for Al-Azhar Alumni on Sunday warned of an “Iranian plot” aimed at promoting the Shia doctrine throughout the Arab and Islamic World.

In his speech, former Moroccan minister of religious endowments Abdel Kabir el-Alawi pointed out that the Iranian government supported Shia minorities resident in the Gulf States. “Iran encourages thousands of Sunni Muslim students to study at its universities,” he said. “Meanwhile, it propagates its Shia doctrines via satellite channels.”

“Political rule in Iran is based on religion, which serves to strengthen the regime in Tehran,” he added, insinuating that the weakness of ruling regimes in Sunni countries was attributable to their secular natures.
