Cairo International Airport authorities this week seized two pistols and a number of live bullets found on a Spanish diplomat arriving at the airport. The diplomat was carrying the weapons in one of her bags on her return to Cairo.
The authorities said the seized weapons included one Glock pistol, one CZ 75 pistol and 400 live bullets.
The Spanish diplomat said she was carrying the weapon for personal protection.
Egyptian authorities will hold the weapons until they receive the approval of the Spanish Embassy and the Interior Ministry to allow the weapons in. Sources said that if the diplomat fails to get permission, Egyptian authorities will confiscate the weapons.
