Aid convoy to Gaza arrives in Arish

The Asia 1 convoy arrived at the port of Arish early on morning Tuesday, according to the head of the port, Gamal Abdel Maqsoud.

The Asia 1 convoy, led by four buses carrying 108 activists from different Asian countries, began to arrive in Gaza on Sunday via the Rafah road crossing, said Palestinian sources.

The convoy carries medical and humanitarian aid from several Asian countries to the people of Gaza. The aid is currently being unloaded from the ship and the process should finish by midday.

Fees required for the convoy to enter Arish were paid following communications between Egyptian authorities and several Asian embassies, a security source said. The source declined to reveal the identity of those who paid the fees.

The aid convoy consists of four ambulances and eight trucks carrying 1000 tons of medical supplies, clothing and milk for infants as well supplies for people with special needs.

Asia 1 left India on 2 December but was denied passage through Pakistan. The convoy changed route and traveled through Iran, Turkey and Syria, finally arriving in the city of Arish in North Sinai.
