Aid convoy crosses into Gaza through Rafah

The Miles of Smiles 11 aid convoy entered the Gaza Strip through the Rafah border crossing on Thursday calling for an end to the siege on Gaza and expressing solidarity with the strip’s residents.

Around 83 Arab and foreign activists from Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, South Africa and England have entered Gaza, an official with the convoy said.

Sixty passenger cars and ambulances are part of the convoy to help people with special needs, the official added, saying, “Preparation of medications to meet medical needs is underway."

Miles of Smiles 11 was organized by Partners for Peace and Development for Palestinians, in association with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), and relief organizations in Europe.

Gaza has been under Israeli siege since Hamas seized power in 2007. Many sea and land convoys have attempted to enter Gaza to deliver aid to residents.

The Israeli military killed nine activists on 31 May 2010 during an attack on a Turkish ship that was sailing with the first Gaza Freedom Flotilla.
