National Movement Party Chief Ahmed Shafiq has said that he submitted his resignation to the members of the party’s supreme board.
“I submitted today my resignation to my colleagues, the members of the supreme board of the Egyptian National Movement Party,” he tweeted on Saturday.
“My resignation comes due to the hard circumstances through which I was doing my job. I promise at the same time that I will be more active and that I will serve all Egyptians. Thank you,” he added.
Meanwhile, Yehia Qadry, Shafiq’s deputy, said that he had been told that Shafiq was attacked by some people, without naming them. He denied being pressured to submit his resignation.
Speaking to Al-Masry Al-Youm, Qadry said that he spoke with Shafiq for almost an hour trying to convince him not to resign. Qadry added that he tried to dissuade him from quitting for a few days until they could discuss the issue in Emirates, where Shafiq is based, but he was determined to resign.
