Activists protest against trying civilians in military courts

Dozens of activists protested against military trials for civilians outside the military prosecution office in Nasr City, north east Cairo, on Sunday.

The protest started at 9 am this morning, while activist Asmaa Mahfouz was being questioned inside the office.

Protesters told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the cases of activist Loai Nagaty and others are also being reviewed at the same time by the military court, which wants to resume their trials.

The 25 January Revolution Union Coalition and the Egyptian Current Party said in a joint statement late on Saturday that the military prosecution summoned activist Mahfouz for an investigation, providing “no clear reason” for doing so.

The statement added that a military police officer handed a summons to Mahfouz’s parents without giving any details about the case.

“If she wants to get information, she’d better go tomorrow, instead of getting into bigger trouble,” he reportedly threatened.

The statement described military trials for civilians as “another form of terrorism and freedom suppression.”

It also stressed that there should be no return to suppression and intimidation of political activists.
