Activists, politicians, media figures and doctors in Egypt have launched a campaign to offer the Syrian people moral and financial support against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.
The Doctors Syndicate announced Thursday in a conference that its sub-headquarters will receive donations for the Syrian people.
The campaign’s coordinator, Bassam al-Dowaihy, called for withdrawing legitimacy from the Assad regime and putting all regime figures on trial at the International Court of Justice for crimes against humanity.
Dowaihy stressed that the UN should seek the evacuation of wounded people from Syrian hospitals before crimes are committed against them in Syrian prisons. He demanded that the Egyptian authorities expel the Syrian ambassador, although Syria removed its ambassador in mid-February in response to Cairo’s decision to recall Egypt’s ambassador to Syria.
"We are counting on Al-Azhar to intervene and call for ending the bloodshed," Dowaihy said. Al-Azhar’s envoy to the conference stressed that Al-Azhar supports the Syrian people.
Dowaihy went on to accuse Iran and Hezbollah of attempting to implement a Shia plan in the Arab region that starts from Syria.
Al-Hewar satellite channel head Azam al-Temaimy said a number of media personnel have adopted a negative stance on the Syrian revolution, despite their support for the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. He described the situation in Syria as catastrophic and demanded that the international community take a quick steps to aid civilians in Syria.
The Syrian woman is an icon for the Syrian revolution, said former Freedom and Justice Party MP Azza al-Garf, who called on Morsy and the Egyptian people to offer Syrians support. She added that Assad’s fate will be like that of other toppled Arab dictators.
Egyptian youth activist Moaz Abdel Karim called on Egyptians to offer financial aid and media support to Syrians and to establish field hospitals on the Syrian borders to treat the injured.
