Academic year postponed for two weeks

The Supreme Council of Universities in Egypt, headed by the Minister of Higher Education Moataz Khurshid, on Thursday decided to postpone the beginning of the academic semester for two weeks.

According to the decision, the universities will open on Saturday, the first of October, instead of 17 September, to allow for the selection of university leaders before the start of the new academic year.

The council discussed in a meeting on Friday how university leaders will be selected, and submitted their ideas to the cabinet for approval on Sunday.
According to the Supreme Council of Universities’ plan, university elections will start on Monday, 29 August and will end on the first of October with the inauguration of the new leaders.

It added that democratic controls will be applied to all state-funded universities.

The council noted that each candidate will be required to provide a platform reflecting his or her vision and strategy for developing the college or university.

The council also said it would hold seminars for all candidates to talk about their platforms.

The council explained that committees to supervise the selection process will include three members, including two senior professors, and a lecturer. The committee supervising selection of the dean will include a law professor.
