Former presidential hopeful Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh said Thursday that the Supreme Constitutional Court striking down the Political Isolation Law and the Parliamentary Elections Law was “a natural extension of many arbitrary and coup-like decisions.”
“The current coup is an official announcement that the former regime is not gone,” he said.
“Holding the runoff presidential election in light of the fraud we witnessed in the first round and under the current coup aims to confer false legitimacy under a constitutional mask to a complete coup,” he added.
“We confirmed after the first round the inevitability of forming a unified revolutionary leadership that derives its legitimacy from popular support,” he said.
“This leadership must work to restore revolutionary momentum and exert popular pressure to achieve the goals of the revolution and prevent the return of the former regime in all its forms,” Abouel Fotouh added.
“In this difficult time, we call on all national forces to convene and unite around this pressing demand,” he said.
Abouel Fotouh concluded his statement: “The peoples never fall, and when revolutions begin, they remove all the unjust and corrupt people and whatever conspiracies are plotted, no matter how long it takes, because the people will remain, while tyrants are mortal. The revolution continues and will inevitably be triumphant in the near future.”
The statement said Abouel Fotouh will lead a March on Friday from Mostafa Mahmoud Square in Mohandiseen to Tahrir Square to object to the court rulings.
Former presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabbahi, who came third in the first round of the presidential election, said on Thursday evening that an alternative plan in which the “political forces form a national comprehensive movement against tyranny and division” is necessary now more than ever.
