Dozens of supporters of presidential hopeful Hazem Salah Abu Ismail organized a march Sunday evening in the Cairo district of Imbaba to express their rejection of the Presidential Elections Commission’s decision to exclude him from the presidential race.
The march started in Mounira and ended in Imbaba tunnel. Participants in the march said they would organize another one on Friday that will end in Tahrir Square, where a protest will be staged under the title “No to the rule of former regime remnants.”
The protest in Tahrir will also be held to reject the Presidential Elections Commission's decisions.
Sunday’s marchers chanted, “Put up a picture, put up a poster, down with the rule of the military,” and “To those asking about the nationality, the sheikh’s mother turned out to be Egyptian.”
Under Egyptian law, both parents of a presidential candidate should be Egyptian. The commission excluded Abu Ismail from the race after it found evidence that showed that his mother was a US national.
Aside from Abu Ismail, the commission also excluded other top competitors for the post, including former Vice President Omar Suleiman and Muslim Brotherhood candidate Khairat al-Shater.
