The Palestinian leadership will take a decision that has not occurred to anyone if all options for peace fail, said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Abbas said the options available include resorting to negotiations or to the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.
In a meeting with chief editors of Egyptian national papers on Sunday, Abbas added that a decision will only be revealed after September, when it will be seen whether the three promises made to the Palestinians have been fulfilled.
The first promise was made by the US president, who expressed hopes of seeing Palestine as a fully-fledged member of the UN by September, Abbas said.
The second was made by the International Quartet and included a pledge that negotiations would start in September 2010 and end in the same month in 2011.
The third was a Palestinian pledge to have a Palestinian state by September with all institutions needed for a fully operative state, he added.
Regarding reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, Abbas accused Iran of preventing Hamas from signing the Palestinian reconciliation paper proposed by Egypt.
He denied any intervention on the part of Syria to impede reconciliation. The fact that Hamas and Fatah held discussions in Damascus is proof of that, Abbas said, adding that a third round of dicussions was supposed to be held on 28 December but Hamas canceled the meeting.
Asked about the obstacles facing Palestinian dialogue, Abbas replied, “Hamas will sign the reconciliation paper when it is allowed to, as Iran still prevents it from doing so.”
