FJP leader: Constituent Assembly will respect judicial ruling if dissolved

Mohamed al-Beltagy, FJP leader and spokesperson for the communications committee of the Constituent Assembly, said the assembly will abide by the decision of the judicial authorities should they decide to dissolve it.

"The assembly will respect the rulings of the judiciary and the rule of law and it will continue its mission by drafting a constitution and submitting it to the Egyptian people, because it is a national duty," he said on Saturday at a meeting for FJP leaders on the dissolution of the current Constituent Assembly, which is tasked with writing the country's new constitution.

The administrative court is set to hear a case on 17 July that could dissolve the constitution-writing body.

"The assembly agreed since its first day to move forward and complete drafting the constitution, with respect for the judiciary," Beltagy said. "We will give a salute to whatever the judiciary arrives at."

He said the assembly will meet Monday, before a court convenes on Tuesday to decide on dissolving the constituent assembly and "to examine all expected scenarios."

He said the assembly would in continue its mission of being a civil society committee that monitors and follows up the implementation of constitutional provisions put to people in referendums, if the judicial authorities allow for it.

Bahaa Anwar, a member of the New Ghad Party who introduced himself as a spokesman for Egyptian Shiites, spoke up during the meeting to oppose the assembly.

Beltagy did not allow Anwar to speak, saying the meeting was for party representatives, and asking Anwar to leave the room.

"The wording of Article II of the Constitution ignored religions other than the three monotheistic religions," Anwar said following the meeting in a press statement. "Shiites were prevented from practicing their rituals, celebrating the birth of Al-Hussein, the establishment of Shiite mosques and lacked respect as a community."

"We do not recognize President Mohamed Morsy, as long as he does not to recognize us as a community."
