Following the Supreme Constitutional Court ruling that invalidated an elections law and disbanded the lower house of Parliament, Shura Council Speaker Ahmed Fahmy said he would respect any ruling to dissolve the upper house.
On 14 June, the court ordered the dissolution of the People’s Assembly, deeming the law used to elect its members unconstitutional for allowing parties to compete for seats previously reserved for independents. The scope of the ruling might also include the Shura Council, which was elected under the same law.
Earlier this month, two lawyers filed a lawsuit before the State Council Administrative Court to call for the dissolution of the Shura Council after the People’s Assembly was disbanded.
In statements published on Wednesday in the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat, Fahmy said, “Whoever wishes to resort to the judiciary has every right to do so. We respect the judiciary.”
Fahmy said the upper house continues to hold regular sessions.
