Hamas leaders and supporters in Gaza Strip on Monday celebrated Mohamed Morsy’s presidential victory over former Prime Ministry Ahmed Shafiq, according to preliminary results.
Thousands took to the streets raising photos of Morsy and banners in support of Palestinian resistance, while chanting slogans in support of the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate.
The massive demonstration celebrating Morsy’s win began from the house of Ismail Haniyeh, prime minister of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, and continued to the headquarters of the Red Cross.
Hamas spokesperson Sami Abu Zohri said that the result of the Egyptian presidential election is a victory for the Egyptian people, the revolution and its martyrs, adding that Morsy’s win will help break the siege on Gaza and support the Palestinian cause, especially on the Jerusalem issue.
"We congratulate our sister country Egypt, the revolution and the revolutionaries," said Ismail Hanyeh.
He continued, "We hope that Egypt enjoys stability, security and safety and we are still waiting for the official results of the presidential election.”
“We, the Palestinian people, follow the political scene in Egypt. We pin great hopes upon the Egyptian leadership, revolution, army, people and presidency to bolster the resistance of the Palestinian people, which has looked to Egypt throughout history,” he added.
