The military judiciary started an official investigation on Monday into accusations that a former Air Force major general received kickbacks from a US company to grant it certain contracts, a case that Al-Masry Al-Youm had covered in detail on 16 February.
Assistant Military Prosecutor Hisham al-Fiki asked the Armed Forces Institute of Languages to translate those contracts. He had also received the testimony of Al-Masry Al-Youm’s reporter, Omar al-Hadi.
The newspaper obtained a document issued by the US Financial Markets Commission on 29 May 2009, revealing that the major general received US$564,000 for “consulting and marketing services” from 1997 until the end of 2002 in return for contracts to implement certain projects from 1999 to 2004 valued at $64 million.
The major general admitted that he received money to persuade the Egyptian party to sign those contracts.
The commission fined the company $267,000 with $70,000 in interest to be paid to the treasury for paying out money without recording the services rendered.
