‘Abducted’ police officer released for ransom

A police colonel who had reportedly been abducted was let go after his family paid a huge ransom to release him, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm.

Colonel Momen Ibrahim Afify, an officer at the General Department for Training Security Forces, was apparently released after his family paid LE110,000 to the kidnappers.

Security forces are said to be intensifying their efforts to arrest the kidnappers, combing the desert close to the place where he was allegedly abducted.

Afify was spending the weekend on his ranch in Gelbana village, in Qantara, east of Suez, when he reportedly contacted a friend to say he was in danger and needed LE50,000 immediately. The call then cut off.

The ranch security guard said he was outside buying seeds. On coming back he found the officer’s windshield and back right door perforated by bullets and the officer gone.
