Industrial deal focus of Israeli talks in Cairo, Amman

A delegation from the Israeli Foreign Ministry traveled to Amman on Wednesday following a one-day visit to Cairo, where they met with Egyptian officials to discuss the implementation of the Qualified Industrial Zones Agreement (QIZ).

The Israeli delegation was composed of three Foreign Ministry officials, informed sources at Cairo International Airport said.

The QIZ agreements allow Egypt and Jordan to export products to the US duty free if the products contain Israeli inputs of at least 8 percent for Jordanian products and 10.5 percent for Egyptian.

The delegation discussed resuming negotiations, which began in April when an Egyptian delegation visited Tel Aviv, to amend the QIZ agreement to reduce the required Israeli component to 8.5 percent.

Egypt also wishes to add its southern governorates to the agreement.

Under this QIZ deal, Egyptian exports to the US amounted to US$10.3 billion in 2011.
