A nationwide fuel shortage has contributed to skyrocketing food prices in several southern governorates.
In Qena, fruit prices increased by 35 percent on Monday. Vegetables were also 25 percent more expensive.
Poultry and fish prices have also soared. The price of a chicken reached LE20 up from LE16. Duck and goose prices jumped from LE45 to LE75. One kilogram of Tilapia fish would set customers back LE22.
Market observers blamed the soaring prices on a lack of vehicles transporting food commodities to markets, after costs of transportation have tripled due to a shortage of diesel oil.
