Egyptian Tax Authority employees from several governorates continued on Wedensday to protest outside the authority’s main office in Cairo demanding the dismissal of Finance Ministry Undersecretary Mounira al-Qady, according to eyewitnesees.
Qady is the wife of Lieutenant General Sami Anan, deputy chairman of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
Some employees threatened to start a hunger strike if their demands are not met, the website of Egypt's flagship paper Al-Ahram reported on Wednesday.
The employees are also calling for the removal of the authority’s director, Ahmed Refaat, saying the two maintain their posts despite having exceeded the official pension age of 60 years. The workers also say the authority’s leaders are linked to the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak, according to Al-Ahram.
Independent daily Youm7 reported that the employees vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met, and noted that colleagues in other governorates are taking part.
One protesting employee told Youm7 that other demands include setting wage limits for authority leaders and prohibiting employment extensions for those over the pension age.
In February, the Facebook page of the Kazeboon (Liars) Campaign — which targets the SCAF and seeks to expose what it says are lies propagated by the military — posted a purportedly official document in which Qady implied that state employees who refuse to donate a portion of their salaries to a fund supporting the Egyptian economy would be punished.
