Natural gas pipeline to resume operations in hours, says Gasco source

The pipeline that transports natural gas to Jordan and Israel will start operating again within hours, a source from Gasco, the company in charge of the pipeline, told the privately owned newspaper Al-Tahrir on Monday.

The source said the pumping will be experimental for several days and will then operate regularly.

The pipeline, located south of Arish city in North Sinai, was fixed after an explosion on 5 February, the source said.

The pipeline resumed pumping gas on Monday to houses in Arish, a steam plant that generates electricity and central Sinai's heavy industrial zone, the source said.

Egyptian authorities have reported that unknown assailants targeted the gas pipeline 12 times, with six attacks at pipeline stations and six on the pipeline itself, with two other failed attempts.

Many Egyptians do not welcome the gas agreement with Israel signed 20 years ago under former President Hosni Mubarak's rule, saying Israel doesn't pay enough for the gas.

Some of the pipeline explosions led to closures that lasted several weeks.

In November, Egypt said it will provide more security for the pipeline through setting alarms and hiring Bedouins to secure it.

Egypt doubled the gas price for Jordan in October.
