Syrians in Egypt call on Parliament to expel ambassador

The Syrian community in Egypt on Sunday submitted a request to the People’s Assembly signed by 300,000 Syrians demanding the expulsion of Syria’s ambassador to Egypt and the withdrawal of Egypt’s ambassador in Damascus.

They called on Parliament to recognize the Syrian National Council as a representative for the Syrian revolution and to grant temporary residency permits to Syrians who escaped President Bashar al-Assad’s bloody crackdown on protests.

Syrians “need the support of the Egyptian people as well as its Parliament, which was elected after a great revolution that removed the corrupt regime,” the request said.

It demanded support for Syrians and opposition activists “who have been facing all forms of violence, killing and destruction because of their demand for peaceful change, until the Syrian regime falls and the Arab dream of removing dictators’ regimes comes true.”

Syrian National Council spokesperson Basma Qadmany called on the Egyptian Parliament to support Syrians and their revolution, which was inspired by Egypt’s.

Momen Koafatiya, deputy chief of the Coordinators of the Syrian Revolution in Egypt, commended Parliament for freezing relations with its Syrian counterpart and said that expelling and summoning ambassadors would not be enough.

He called on Egypt to support the Syrian revolution and people, employing political, economic and military measures to stop the bloodshed, arm the Free Syrian Army and form an Arab army to support the revolution.
