The state-run General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) on Wednesday contracted 120,000 tons of French wheat at US$312 per ton, expected to arrive in Egypt in mid-September.
“Of 11 offers received in our tender, we chose the two that best fit our quality standards,” said GASC Vice-President Nomani Nassr.
The tender had been for one million tons of wheat, Nassr explained, of which only 120,000 were contracted so as not to give the impression on global markets that Egypt was suffering from a wheat crisis.
Nevertheless, the appearance of bread lines outside government cooperatives have been reported–especially in Cairo and Daqahlia–since the beginning of Ramadan two days ago.
