Presidential hopeful Amr Moussa said Saturday he has absolute confidence that the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) will transfer power to civilians as promised by 30 June 2012.
The SCAF will hand over power to an elected civilian government and thus there will be a democratic system in Egypt based on elections, and that will be what Moussa calls the "second republic" under a new constitution, he told Saudi newspaper Al-Sharq.
Moussa said the presidential system must be maintained in Egypt, and officials from the president down to village chiefs must be elected. He added the term of office of all elected officials should not exceed two terms.
Moussa rejected opposition politician and former director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency Mohamed ElBaradei's suggestion that the People's Assembly elect an interim president.
On Friday ElBaradei suggested that the newly elected People's Assembly elect a president to preside over the remainder of the transitional period, and then form a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution to determine the political system and ensure a civil state, rights and freedoms.
The powers of the new president should be specified in the constitution prior to the presidential elections, he added, saying that a new parliament should also be elected in accordance with the forthcoming constitution.
