Suez’s security chief said police will exercise self-control with protests and events marking the 25 January revolution’s first anniversary, state-run news agency MENA reported Wednesday.
Police General Adel Refaat said that no blood will be shed in Suez, one of the earliest Egyptian cities to join the revolution. City resident Mostafa Reda, 20, was the first martyr of the revolution. He was shot and killed near Arbaeen on 25 January.
Refaat said he is confident about youth behavior and that protests will be peaceful. He expressed his keenness to have good relations with revolutionaries and families of the martyrs.
“Since I assumed my position in Suez, I have cared about Suez’s youth and revolutionaries,” he said, adding that he has always instructed police that lives of the youth are the most important.
“I have good relationships with martyrs families and revolutionaries of Suez,” he said. “I fulfilled my pledges to the martyrs’ families and arrested suspects accused of killing protesters, including policemen. We also arrested runaway businessman Ibrahim Farag and his sons Araby and Adel.”
“I confirm to martyrs’ families that I will arrest the remaining suspect, Aboudy Ibrahim Farag. We always feel what martyrs’ families of Suez feel,” he continued.
About 18 protesters died and 300 were injured in Suez in the police crackdown on protesters during the 18-day uprising last year, which led to the ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak.
