Prosecutor releases April 6 activists on bail

The general prosecution on Thursday decided to release three April 6 Youth Movement activists who have been in custody since Tuesday pending investigations on charges of distributing posters criticizing the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). The protesters hail from the Democratic Front faction of the movement.

The prosecution released Mahmoud Zakareya, Mahmoud Hossam Eddin, and Sherif Mohamed on bail and will continue its investigations, said Tarek al-Khouly, the Democratic Front’s spokesperson.

He added that the prosecution dropped some of the charges, including that of insulting the military and attempting to overthrow the regime. They are charged with disturbing public security and distributing posters without permission, said Khouly.

Khouly said that a fourth activist belonging to the group was released without bail on Wednesday.

Policemen at the police station assaulted activists affiliated with the group and detained them for three days for distributing posters that call for demonstrations on 25 January without having obtained permission from the authorities.

The prosecution accused the defendants of tarnishing Egypt’s image abroad, because the leaflets demanded SCA’s prosecution for violence against protesters.

The activists’ lawyer has complained to the public prosecution over the detention of the defendants.
