Transport stresses need to train Metro drivers

Transportation Minister Alaa Fahmi gave instructions to officials of Egypt’s state-run Metro company in which he emphasized the necessity of training company employees, particularly Metro drivers.

Fahmi pointed out that the company’s traineeship program currently included internal training at the company’s training centers in Egypt alongside training provided by specialized centers abroad.

Mohamed el-Sheemi, managing director of the company contracted to train Metro drivers in Cairo’s Shubra el-Kheima district is reportedly developing a program to train employees of the Metro’s second line in addition to providing technical training for engineers and technicians. Some 120 drivers are currently being trained at the institute.

Training periods generally range from between three days and one month, according to el-Sheemi, who noted that 550 employee training programs had been developed last year with a view to boosting employee efficiency and performance.

He went on to point out that the Shubra el-Kheima institute was equipped with a driving simulator, which allows trainees to experience a life-like simulation of train driving. Drivers subsequently receive training on a real train situated inside the institute.
