Around 150 relatives of those accused of inciting the violence outside the Maspero state television building in October gathered Tuesday before Cairo Criminal Court to try to see their family members stand trial.
However, the judge banned families and the media from the courtroom, only allowing in the suspects and their defense teams.
Abdel Moez Ibrahim, head of the Cairo Court of Appeals, decided Monday to delegate two judges from courts of appeals to complete the public prosecution's investigation of the Maspero incident.
Violence erupted outside Maspero when military forces attacked a Copt-led demonstration, leaving 27 protesters and one military personnel dead. Several activists, including prominent blogger Alaa Abd El Fattah, are accused of inciting the incident.
