ElBaradei calls for end to ‘brutal massacre’

Presidential hopeful Mohamed ElBaradei called on the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) to stop what he described as "the brutal massacre" of protesters and to "fear God."

On Twitter, ElBaradei also said live bullets and a "nerve agent" had been used against the protesters in Tahrir. Rumors had also circulated on the internet that security forces were using a type of tear gas that's banned internationally, but neither of these claims have been confirmed independently.

Meanwhile, protests continued in Tahrir and other squares across Egypt for the sixth day. Clashes in Alexandria killed one protester Tuesday, bringing the death toll from clashes nationwide to 31.

This is the second death resulting from clashes in Alexandria; activist Bahaa al-Sonousy was killed there early Sunday morning.

Salama Abdel Moneim, the deputy health minister in Alexandria, said the clashes Tuesday in front of the Alexandria Security Directorate led to the death of Sherif Samy Abdel Maguid, 38, who was shot in the head, and the injury of 28 others.

The injuries ranged from suffocation to cuts from stone-throwing and pushing.

Efforts by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy have failed to bring calm. Sharaf, whose cabinet resigned Monday, had reportedly given instructions to Essawy to stop the use of violence against protesters.

On Sunday, the government praised the Ministry of Interior for exercising restraint in the face of protests.

The SCAF accepted the cabinet resignation on Wednesday, but Sharaf's government will remain in power until a new one can be sworn in.
