Muslim Brotherhood (MB) General Guide Mahdi Akef has announced his intention to retire from his post once his current term expires at the end of December. "I want to give the opportunity for new blood to run through the veins of the group," he told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Akef denied rumors that he had initially set conditions for staying on as MB leader for another term. "I just want to serve the group as an ordinary member, like anyone else."
Akef’s political adviser, Abdel Hamid el-Ghazali, confirmed the general guide’s decision to retire, despite appeals by leading group members for him to reconsider. "He’s the most experienced for the job," said el-Ghazali.
