Interior Minister Habib al-Adly would use the Salafis to counter the Muslim Brotherhood, according to what liberal intellectual Tarek Heggy said Adly had told him. Heggy mentioned the conversation on Saturday during an interview with the privately owned al-Mehwar channel.
“The Brotherhood wants the bigger share of the cake,” Heggy said, warning the military council of agreeing to the Brotherhood's demands.
“They did not change their discourse after the revolution, and they talk as if they have already come to power,” he said.
“Al-Azhar was but a tool in the hands of the former president, but has changed its role after the revolution,“ he said, adding that the image of Islam will improve with its new role.
Heggy predicted that the Islamists would not win more than 15 percent of parliamentary seats if every eligible Egyptian voted in the elections.
He said the only two candidates suitable for the presidency are Amr Moussa and Mohamed ElBaradei. “I personally go for ElBaradei,” he said.
