Egyptian authorities have declared a state of emergency along the Red Sea coast after Egypt’s General Petroleum Corporation informed local officials that one of the company's wells has been leaking from three spots in Gamsha, a village north of Hurghada and 60 km from the sea.
Al Jazeera English reported about the leak late Wednesday night, saying a team had arrived in Gamsha to clean up the damage. According to Al Jazeera, the spill has reached the Red Sea and crude oil is still flowing from the wells.
The equivalent of 80 barrels of oil has already leaked into the sea, and members from a governmental agency are at the site determining how to contain the leak.
