Five people were killed and six injured Monday in a car accident near a tourist resort in the Red Sea town of Hurghada.
An Interior Ministry statement said one of the car’s tyres exploded due to speeding, and it then ran off course and flipped over.
The injured were taken to the Hurghada public hospital. The prosecution ordered a committee be delegated from the traffic department to investigate the accident.
Egypt has one of the world's highest traffic accident rates due to careless driving, poor roads and poor cars, which leads to the death and injury of thousands every year.
Road accidents are the second highest cause of death in Egypt after heart disease.
