ElBaradei calls on Egyptian authorities to protect Friday’s demo

Presidential candidate Mohamed ElBaradei has called on the Egyptian security services to protect the demonstration in Tahrir Square this coming Friday, which is to be held under the slogan “Correcting the Path of the Revolution."

The ruling military council issued a statement on Wednesday saying that the responsibility of securing the demonstration rests with those participating in it.

In a press release on Tuesday, ElBaradei said: “Demonstrating is a right guaranteed to every citizen, and it must be respected, as we are building Egypt on true democracy and social justice.”

He added: "In light of the unjustified deterioration of security and its implications on the right of every Egyptian to live in freedom and dignity, I ask the security services to exercise its responsibility and protect the peaceful demonstration, and the demonstrators to fully abide by its peaceful nature.”

ElBaradei stressed that there are basic demands of the revolution that have not yet been achieved, most notably the lack of a clear road map and timetable for the transition to civilian rule, as well as an end to military trials for civilians.

He also expressed sympathy with calls from activists for laws that properly regulate the parliamentary elections and electoral constituencies so as to ensure fair representation of Egyptian people from various social classes and relious groups.

Political forces are mobilizing for Friday’s demonstration to demand an end to military tribunals for civilians, the achievement of social justice, the amendment of election laws and the return of security to the Egyptian street.
