Revolutionary group calls for mass Tahrir protest on Friday

An Egyptian revolutinary group on Monday called for a massive demonsration on Friday in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

In a post on its Facebook page, the Revolution Youth Coalition urged Egyptians to participate.

It said the protest will voice a number of demands, including halting military tribunals of civilians, announcing a schedule to hand power over to an elected civilian government, and revoking the anti-protest law, which incriminates strikes and demonstrations.

According to unofficial statistics, more than 12,000 civilians are being subjected to military trials, some of whom were sentenced and are now serving time in military prisons. Others are still being tried on various charges, such as thuggery and expressing anti-military opinions.

Such trials do not meet international standards for fair trials.

The coalition also called for a total change of the recently approved law on parliamentary elections which, it said, could create false parliamentary representations like those that dominated the reign of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The law makes the polling process vulnerable to tribal biases and vote-buying, the coalition said.

The parliamentary elections law, issued in July, stipulates that half the candidates run through a single-winner system, with the other half nominated through a list-based system.

Critics of the law say it is at odds with the demands of political powers, who largely prefer a reliance on list-based candidacy alone.

Other demands mentioned in the coalition’s Facebook post include restoring security to the streets, eliminating thuggery, and setting minimum and maximum wages.
