Manpower minister: First ever business syndicate established

Manpower and Immigration Minister Ahmed Hassan al-Borai announced on Sunday the establishment of Egypt's first ever trade union for businessmen and businesswomen.

At the inauguration of the first syndicate for medical equipment importers, which was attended by Health Minister Amr Helmy and the medical equipment importers syndicate chief Mohamed al-Hefny, Borai said the new entity will help extend the labor freedoms secured only until now by international treaties.

Borai stressed that those freedoms are necessary to regulate relations between employers and workers, and to improve the Egyptian job market.

Borai added that the cabinet's legislative committee has expressed its approval of a proposed law on trade union freedoms. He added that the law will be submitted to the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) for approval next week.

The minister stressed that trade union elections will not be held until the new law is passed. He threatened to quit if the government insists on holding them under the current law.
