Egypt’s Mufti calls to direct zakat money to Somalia

Dar al-Ifta al-Masriyyah called on Muslims Friday to direct zakat (charity) to help Somalia’s famine victims.

The institution said in a statement that the Islamic nation should offer aid to the drought-stricken country’s victims to alleviate the effects of such a terrible humanitarian disaster.

It also called on other Muslim countries to help eradicate hunger and disease there.

It is the primary duty of Muslims in various parts of the world to help their fellow Somalis, who are in urgent need, the statement added.

Almsgiving is one of the five pillars of Islam. Muslims generally contribute about 2.5 percent of their personal wealth to zakat each year.
