Prominent Islamist: Ruling council protects protester killers

Islamist presidential hopeful Hazem Abu Ismail accused the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and the attorney general of covering up for those who killed protesters during the 25 January revolution.

At a public conference in the village of Behermes, Giza, Abu Ismail said, "They are playing the innocent, but we won't allow them to ignore the people's will."

Abu Ismail called for the trials of corrupt officials and police officers to be held after the transitional period ends and a stable government is formed.

He also criticized the SCAF for announcing the preparation of a set of criteria for drafting a new constitution. He said he rejects the document as being against the will of the nation as expressed in the March referendum on constitutional amendments.

“I will throw a party if the SCAF hands power over to the nation before the end of the year,” he said, adding that if the people’s will is ignored bloody clashes will ensue.

He also criticized the lack of a time frame to clarify the order of upcoming events. "The scheduled time for the match has run out – we're now playing in overtime."

Abu Ismail expressed confidence that he will win the presidential election, adding that he will be the first Islamist president of an Arab state in modern history.

He said more than 50,000 campaigners are working on his presidential election campaign, saying this is an indicator that he will win. He added that this is the only guarantee of the 25 January revolution’s success.
