The British government estimates former President Hosni Mubarak and his former assistants' UK wealth at 40 million British pounds, said British Ambassador to Egypt James Watt.
Watt said in statements to Al-Hayat TV channel Wednesday evening that the British government has frozen the financial assets of 40 Egyptian suspects in England.
"We welcome any request from Egyptian authorities regarding Egyptian fugitives in Britain," he said.
Magdie al-Shafie, head of Egypt’s Interpol, said in an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm on 8 June, that England is a “safe place” for Egyptian fugitives as there is no extradition agreement between the two countries. Shafie added that former Finance Minister Youssef Boutros Ghali, who was sentenced to 30 years in absentia last month, is currently in London.
Watt also said England is ready to provide assistance to help the Egyptian economy recover.
"We look forward to working with Egypt in the next phase,” he said.
He said many British companies in Egypt did not hesitate to construct new projects after the revolution. British investors have significant investments in the gas sector and overall, the British foreign investments in Egypt were not affected by the revolution, he said.
