Judge accuses Mubarak of high treason

Fekri Kharroub, former president of the Alexandria Judges Club and current president of the Supreme State Security Court, called on Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud to question ex-president Hosni Mubarak over charges of treason.

He held that the ousted president sought to transform the republic into a monarchy by transferring power to his son Gamal, violating the constitution and interfering in the judiciary’s work.

The judge called for Mubarak’s trial in accordance with law 346/1956.

Kharroub also called for putting former ministers on trial for violations committed while in service.

The trial of ousted Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on charges of corruption and intentionally killing protesters will start on 3 August. His two sons will also be tried on charges of corruption.

Mubarak, his sons and business tycoon Hussein Salem, face charges of illegal acquisition of wealth and selling Egyptian natural gas to Israel at extremely low prices.

The former president, former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and some senior police officers, are suspected of involvement in killing protesters during the 25 January revolution.

Mubarak allegedly exploited his influence with government authorities to gain illegal benefits for himself and his two sons.

The toppled president is also said to have allowed Salem to seize hundreds of thousands of acres of state-owned land in the most prestigious tourist areas of Sharm el-Sheikh.
