Security authorities have not yet received any formal notification from Interpol concerning the arrest of the fugitive Egyptian businessman Hussein Salem, said Mohsen Mourad, assistant interior minister for public security.
Salem is reported to currently be in Israel.
"Once security authorities receive a formal notification on the arrest of Hussein Salem, it will be immediately announced," said Mourad in a statement to Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Meanwhile, Magdy al-Shafei, director general of the Egyptian Interpol, said that a red bulletin concerning the warrant for Hussein Salem has been issued and circulated internationally.
Salem is an Egyptian business tycoon and is reported to be an exceedingly close friend of former President Mubarak and his son Gamal Mubarak.
He was referred to the Criminal Court on charges of harming Egypt and squandering public funds by selling Egyptian natural gas to Israel at prices lower than the international benchmark.
Criticism of gas exports to Israel intensified after the 25 January revolution.
