Dozens of Copts protesting before the Egyptian Radio and Television Union building refused on Thursday to suspend their sit-in until Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy follows through with his promise to reopen closed churches.
The refusal came despite the fact that Bishop Mitas Nasr of the Virgin Mary Church on Wednesday announced the sit-in would be suspended until 27 May following Essawy’s pledge to reopen 16 already-built churches.
Protesters said that a previous decision to suspend the protests came following demands to release 17 Christians arrested during the first Maspero sit-in, but the decision was later reversed and protests continued.
