President Hosni Mubarak met with the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Jaber yesterday in Sharm el-Sheikh to discuss efforts to revive Middle East peace negotiations in light of the indirect talks among Palestinians and Israelis.
Official sources said the talks also touched on the latest developments in Iraq, the Iranian nuclear program, and recent events in Yemen and Sudan. Discussion also took place on ways to increasing trade between Egypt and Kuwait, encouraging economic cooperation, and increasing Kuwaiti investment in the Egyptian market after the introduction of measures by the Egyptian government to facilitate and encourage investments.
Arab diplomatic sources considered the Kuwait’s prince’s visit to Syria yesterday to have “a significance that points to top issues being Arab-Arab relationships and the prospects of reconciliation.”
Sources added that “Kuwait knows well that Syria has influence on both the Iraqi issue, which is vital for Kuwait, and the Palestinian situation, which affects joint Arab relationships.”
Al-Jaber’s talks with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad are expected to address, among other things, the recent case of an Iranian spy cell reportedly uncovered in Kuwait.
