The Qasr al-Eini and Mattariya hospitals have closed their emergency units due to attacks by thugs. They are due to reopen when security services are able to protect the patients and medical teams.
“Security leaders promised they will expedite protection,” said Dr. Motaz Abul Azm, director of Qasr al-Eini hospital’s emergency unit.
He said that clashes had erupted between two families early this month, in which they used knives and shotguns. “When 40 of the wounded from both sides were brought to the unit, they continued fighting inside and destroyed the place,” he added. “It seems the police are more concerned with securing football matches than hospitals.”
Safwat Hanna, deputy director of the Mattariya Hospital, told of a similar clash that took place, leaving two people dead inside the emergency unit.
