The number of internet users in Egypt increased by 28 percent last year, according to a government report.
Egypt’s internet and mobile phone usage rates are among the highest in the developing world. More than 23 million Egyptians used the internet by the end of last year, up from 16.6 million in 2009.
The report, released by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, compared usage rates from the end of 2009 to the end of 2010.
Users that access the internet through mobile phones increased from 4.8 million to 7.9 million, while the number of mobile phone subscribers soared from 55.4 million to 70.7 million.
The report revealed a drop in fixed-line phone subscribers from 10.3 million to 9.6 million.
